MAYOR VILLARAIGOSA, CONCILMEMBER ROSENDAHL TO HOST 2008 DAY OF SERVICE FOR MAR VISTA, VENICE, AND DEL REY
Who: Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa
Los Angeles City Councilmember Bill Rosendahl
When: 8:00 am to 2:30 pm, Saturday, January 26, 2008
Where: Mar Vista Recreation Center
11430 Woodbine Avenue, Mar Vista, 90066
(NW corner of Palms Blvd. and Sawtelle Blvd.)
What: Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa and Councilmember Bill Rosendahl will host the 2008 Day of Service at Mar Vista Recreation Center. Residents of Mar Vista and the surrounding neighborhoods will join with community members to work together on nearly 50 separate projects to benefit the local neighborhoods. The goal of the Day of Service is to address community needs, provide public education and strengthen community partnerships.
Registration opens at 7:00 am at Mar Vista Recreation Center. The Kick-Off Ceremony begins at 8:00 am. Community service projects will run from 8:20 am to 12:30 pm. Free lunch and entertainment will be from 12:30-2:30 pm. Entertainment will feature local bands, stilt walkers and youth martial arts demonstrations.
The Day of Service is a great opportunity for community involvement, and a way to engage and connect local resources and assets-both human and organizational-from schools, businesses, neighborhood councils, community-based organizations, faith-based organizations, City departments, the offices of public officials, and parent and youth groups.
Since the first Day of Service four years ago, the City of Los Angeles and its community members have worked hand in hand to rehabilitate neglected homes of senior citizens, create art in local parks, and plant gardens throughout the City. Church groups, community organizations, office workers, and school children have participated in numerous service projects that benefited hundreds of non-profits and their local neighborhoods. Whether it's planting trees, painting murals, cleaning streets or volunteering in retirement homes, anyone can participate in Day of Service as long as they are willing to give their time.
In the cooperative spirit of service and giving back to the community, churches and temples, business and labor, schools and parents, non-profits and every single individual in the community are encouraged to participate at the 2008 Day of Service. The event will bring together members of every religious denomination, racial and ethnic group, and neighborhood across the City to work together for the improvement of our communities.
